John Bright's Regiment of Foote

Part of the Roundhead Association in the English Civil War Society

Within an ECW regiment there are many roles available for members to consider. No one will ever be forced to do what they don't want to, but there are rules and regulations to be recognised. These are usually enforced for safety or legal reasons, or occasionally because we feel bloody minded. It will also come to pass that at times great emotional pressure will be placed upon you, usually by officers who have no other justification for trying to get you to do something you don't want to. Only the strong can resist such emotional blackmail

The English Civil War Society is a non-profit making organisation dedicated to the re-creation of battles of the seventeenth century. The main aim of the society is to stimulate interest in the Civil war period by authentic re-creation of 17th Century life. The Society consists of two bodies, "THE ROUNDHEAD ASSOCIATION " (Right but Repulsive) and "THE KINGS ARMY" (Wrong but Romantic).

Both armies consist of "Brigades" and "Regiments". Generals and Officers are promoted from the ranks and thus opportunity exists for anyone to advance with time and effort. Involvement in Civil War enactment is not as costly as you might think. The clothing worn by Civil War soldiers was basically simple and most items can easily be either made by the reenactor or bought, quite cheaply, from traders in the society. The regiment has its own supply of equipment and clothing for new members which may be used until you have obtained your own. Opportunity exists for a member of the regiment to fulfil a multitude of roles. We are in constant need of Musketeers, Pikemen, Artillery crew, Drummers, Water Carriers and First-aiders.

For more details see the relevant pages on this site by pressing the icons above. As a re-enactor you can take part in Major Battles, Skirmishes, Drill displays and Living History displays, each of which provides many chances to use your skills, military, civilian and coarse actor. The Regiment and society organises events throughout the year including 17th Century Living History demonstrations (L.H.), Regimental Invited Events (R.I.E.) where several Regiments are invited to provided a skirmish etc. and Major Musters, when the whole society turns out. It must be kept in mind at all times that Battles are Dangerous. Taking part in a re-enactment battle is at times very similar to playing rugby, but without the ball.
